New Delhi: As much as the Indian team players focus on their sport these days, they also pay attention to their fitness. Indian team captain Virat Kohli introduced such a fitness trend in cricket that now all players take full care of their sport as well as their fitness. But meanwhile, Virender Sehwag, former Team India opener, was not satisfied with the BCCI fitness test. Sehwag has stated that I do not accept these tests.
‘Sachin, Laxman is never near’
Sehwag (Virender Sehwag) citing the example of legendary drummers Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman said that if these players had passed a fitness test, they would never have made it to the squad. Virender Sehwag told Cricbuzz: “ R Ashwin and Varun Chakraborty are probably not in the squad because they did not pass the Yo-Yo test. But I don’t believe in these things. If this was the selection’s first story, then Sachin, Laxman, and Ganguly would never have made it through.
Sehwag (Virender Sehwag) said: “ I didn’t see these three legendary players pass the beep test in front of me. In the beep test, 12.5 scores were to be scored, but Sachin, Ganguly, and Laxman used to bring in 10 or 11 scores. But the skills of these players were very good.
“Competence is more important”
Sehwag believes skill is more important than fitness. He said: “ If your team is in good shape and you lose games and there is a lack of skills among the players, then that is a bad thing. I think there should be an opportunity for those players whose bowling or bats are good. Because he will succeed in difficult times. And you can gradually improve the physical condition of the player.
Let me tell you that Varun Chakraborty was selected in the Indian team because of his great performance in IPL. But he failed two consecutive fitness tests, after which he was excluded from the series against England. Captain Virat Kohli has already made it clear that there will be no laxity with physical form and that the player who will be in shape will play in the squad.
