United Nations, 23 May
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said today that we have seen people “breathing in front of their eyes” during the new storm in India, South America and other parts of the world. Guterres warned that the epidemic was still “all around us, growing and changing.”
“I have been warning from the beginning of the epidemic that no one will be safe until everyone is safe,” he said at the World Health Summit on Friday. Access to vaccines, tests, drugs and supplies has not been the same for everyone. Lack of oxygen has left poor countries at the mercy of the virus. Guterres stressed that vaccination is the only way to control the epidemic worldwide. -PTI
82% of readymade vaccines were purchased by rich countries
Antonio Guterres said that 82 percent of the world’s vaccines have been purchased by rich countries so far and only 0.3 percent have been purchased by poor countries. Guterres reiterated his call to create a task force for the G20 to work together to increase vaccine production capacity. He said that the World Health Organization, global financial institutions are capable of dealing with pharma companies and other stakeholders.
