New Delhi: Leon Mendonca, 14, became the 67th Grand Master of India. Mendoca had been stranded in Europe since March because of Kovid. He played 16 tournaments in three months, which increased his ilo rental to 140 points.

In view of this, the All India Chess Federation (AICF) gave him the title of Grandmaster. Leon Mendonca is the second player to become Grandmaster this year. G. before them Akash obtained this title.

He achieved his first GM standard in the Rigo Chess GM round robin in October and his second in Budapest in November. Its last general manager was found at the Vergani Cup in Italy on December 30.

Mendonka’s coach Vishnu Prasanna told PTI-language: “He was close to getting the grades on several occasions and he got the required scoring points. The feat is not surprising, but he was still under pressure. “Mendonca will play in another competition in Italy before returning to India”.
