Ahmedabad: The first match of the T20 series between India and England will be played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad from March 12. There was a question in the minds of cricket fans who will be opening with Rohit Sharma. Now Captain Virat Kohli has put an end to the speculation.
“ Shikhar will be a reserve opener ”
Indian team captain Virat Kohli has confirmed that Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul will start India’s heats in the T20 international opener against England in Ahmedabad on Friday. Kohli said Shikhar Dhawan will be a reserve opener.
The confusion was over Rahul-Shikhar
Since Rohit, who was absent from the T20 international series in Australia, has been speculating on who among KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan will open the rounds. Rohit succumbed to a hamstring injury late last year.
‘Rohit-Rahul will open’
Kohli said at the press conference: “ I don’t think so (Dhawan and Rahul can both be fit in the game XI). If Rohit plays, it’s very easy. KL and Rohit always do well in the best order for us and both will start the heats for us. In such a situation, where either Rohit is relaxing or KL is out of shape, Shikhar will remain in the squad as the third opener;
“ Rohit-Rahul’s previous record is good ”
Rohit has scored 65 and 60 steps out in the last 2 international T20 games played in January-February 2020. In the last 5 T20 games, Rohit has scored half centuries in three sets. In contrast, Rahul only made a fifty in the last 5 innings of the T20, but he started well, scoring 39, 45, 51, 30 and 0 against the Kangaroos.
