Melbourne: Cricket Australia has said that despite the latest cases of coronavirus infection in Sydney, the third test is underway according to the initial schedule. However, if conditions do not improve, Melbourne was kept as an option to host the third Test.
There is uncertainty over the third test which begins there on January 7 after new cases of Coronavirus infection were discovered on Sydney’s north coasts. The Boxing Day test between India and Australia (IND vs AUS) is scheduled for Melbourne from December 26 and is also in the race to host the third test.

Cricket Australia said in a statement: “We will give Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) the full opportunity to host the third test and Gaba the fourth test. If the situation does not improve in Sydney, as part of the contingency plan, we will conduct the third Test with the Government of Victoria at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and the fourth Test will take place in Brisbane.
The final decision on this will be made during the Boxing Day test. Although conditions have improved on Sydney’s north coasts, there are concerns that Queensland will not make the necessary concessions meaning players and broadcast teams will not be able to travel from Sydney in Brisbane where the fourth test will be held. Acting Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said the board was in contact with the Queensland government for concessions.
Earlier, Melbourne Cricket Club CEO Stuart Fox said on Thursday the club was ready to host two back-to-back tests between India and Australia, but would like the traditional Sydney test to be held on the same pitch at during the new year. . Fox said: “I am in constant contact with Cricket Australia and I want the Sydney test to take place in Sydney. It’s no fun doing it elsewhere.
He said, “If necessary, we will also organize the third test. But traditionally the New Year’s test takes place in Sydney and holds a special place in the Australian Games. I would like this game to take place in Sydney. In an effort to save the Sydney test, New South Wales said yesterday they were ready to host the Brisbane test as well.
