New Delhi: Shardul Thakur has captured everyone’s hearts with his overall performance in the Brisbane test between India and Australia (IND vs AUS). But very few people know that their first level of cricket experience behind this success is hard work.
Around 8 years ago, when Shardul Thakur made his first class debut, the Mumbai squad also had legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan. Although these three veterans did not make it to Jaipur for this game with Rajasthan, they did play in the season opener for Mumbai against the Railways.

Sachin and Zaheer were to join the Indian team for the Test series which would take place with England. Shardul’s school friend Rohit Sharma was captain of the Jaipur game, but Shardul could not grasp the opportunity with both hands. He could only take one wicket and later he was taken out of the squad.
Mumbai, however, recalled him to the squad the same season. In the semifinals, Shardul took 3 wickets against Services. Mumbai also trusted him the following season and he wrote a new success story by taking 27 wickets. Shardul has never looked back since then.
After spending 6 years in the first class, Shardul played his first test match in October 2018 and in that match against the West Indies he was only seen limping after playing 10 balls. However, Thakur has now shown his true talent. On Monday, he became the first Indian player to take 7 wickets or more and put 50 against Australia in Australia.
Dinesh Lad, who coached Rohit and Shardul during his studies, said: “ A few years ago he was very fat and played without direction. I asked him to run on the sand. Shardul then began to work on his physical form.
He was disappointed that Kings XI Punjab had not given him a chance in the IPL. I told him there was no need to be disappointed. Work on your strong side. You practice at the highest level.
Lad believes that Shardul’s success today is the result of his hard work in domestic cricket. Domestic cricket helps to create a player’s temperament. Restraint is needed to play at the highest level and Shardul has that restraint in domestic cricket.
In the Brisbane test, Shardul won 4 major wickets in Australia’s second round in addition to playing 67 points for India. Shardul took the wickets of Marcus Harris, Cameron Green, Tim Paine and Nathan Lyon.
