The Australian government may make it illegal for its citizens stranded in other countries to return home. The federal government is considering exercising broad powers under the Biosafety Act. This means that it would be a crime for anyone to return to Australia after midnight tomorrow if they entered their country 14 days earlier through a high-risk country. Health Minister Greg Hunt says that whatever is necessary can be done to prevent the spread of a listed disease. Anyone attempting a withdrawal can face up to five years in prison or 66,000 fines.
