The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) affiliated with the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has extended an invitation to Nigerian filmmakers to partake in the race for the International Feature Film (IFF) accolade at the upcoming 96th Annual Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars.

As an acknowledged body by AMPAS, the NOSC bears the responsibility of cherry-picking a solitary film that will symbolize Nigeria in the contention for the esteemed IFF Award.

Commencing on August 28, 2023, and continuing the call until September 15, 2023, filmmakers have the avenue to submit their creations using the designated NOSC online portal, a declaration made by the committee itself.

The coveted IFF Award is an annual honor conferred by the Academy to a full-length cinematic production hailing from outside the United States, boasting at least 50 percent of its dialogue or narrative in languages other than English.

Besides complying with this linguistic prerequisite, submitted movies need to meet further criteria encompassing appropriately precise and readable English subtitles, specific shooting formats, and conditions related to theatrical release. Elaborated information can be accessed on the NOSC’s official website.

Recently appointed as the head of the NOSC, Stephanie Linus articulates her enthusiasm in her newfound role, articulating her anticipation for the 96th Oscars as an additional prospect to laud exceptional Nigerian narrators and virtuosos on the global stage.

Assuming her position as the NOSC Chairperson for the Oscar Awards, Linus conveys, “The honor of leading the NOSC for the Oscar Awards is a privilege. Collaborating with my fellow committee members in our joint mission to amplify African filmmakers on the international podium is something I eagerly await. Our present circumstances provide a distinctive opening to commend the extraordinary storytellers and talents whose craft has captivated and united us in numerous ways. I trust that our forthcoming determinations will serve as an inspiration to the prospective generation of filmmakers.”

Marked on the calendar for Sunday, March 10, 2024, the illustrious 96th Oscars ceremony is slated to unfold at the illustrious Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles, California, United States. The event is poised to be live-streamed across more than 200 territories globally, celebrating excellence in the cinematic world.
